Professor
Downing is a nationally recognized leader in forensic nursing research, practice, education, and service. She received her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Iowa in 2010. A practicing forensic nurse for over 20 years, her research focuses on intersections of trauma, abuse, substance use, interpersonal violence and associated health outcomes. She serves as Vice Chair of the Forensic Nursing Subcommittee of the Organization of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Science developing standards for forensic nursing science. She is a former President of the International Association of Forensic Nurses and has served four terms on the Texas Forensic Science Commission. In 2019, she was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
