A former emergency nurse in the U.S. Army Reserve, Schalles was part of the team that opened the newest campus of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Nursing in Mansfield in 2021. While at TTUHSC, Schalles redesigned the Applied Concepts of Pharmacology course, resulting in higher student retention to the School of Nursing.
