Sympathetic neural responses to sleep disorders and insufficiencies

Sleep is vital to all life, yet millions of humans suffer from sleep disorders or insufficiencies. While there are several physiological systems that contribute to healthy and disordered sleep, the autonomic nervous system plays a central role. This seminar will explore the relationship between sleep and the autonomic nervous system, with a particular focus on the sympathetic nervous system. This will include sympathetic neural responses and adaptations to acute and chronic sleep deprivation, insomnia, and obstructive sleep apnea. The seminar will also include a particular focus on the role of biological sex (i.e., male vs. female) on sleep-sympathetic relationships. Finally, the seminar will include the role of environmental and behavioral factors, such as alcohol and psychological stress, on sleep and autonomic function in humans.
