Center for Health Policy

Within HSC, a boundary organization that sits at the intersection of the knowledge and policy spheres, the Center for Health P0licy will be a trusted source of information for policymakers locally, nationally and globally. Rooted in community collaboration and community investment the CHP will carry out and facilitate high quality, innovative research and evaluation that translates into policy and will support practical policy implementation while recognizing that the absence of disease alone does not make a person healthy. In considering the multiple factors necessary to achieve and maintain health it is also clear that policies that influence and affect the health of individuals, communities and populations may not be health policies.

North Texas Eye Research Institute

The North Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI) is changing the world with new discoveries through basic and clinical eye research. Since 1992, our researchers and clinicians in the field of visual science and ophthalmology have been driven to increase awareness about disease development and the need for novel therapies, especially among ethnic and minority populations who have or will develop debilitating vision disorders and related health disparities.

Institute for Health Disparities

In comparison to the general population of Texas, racial and ethnic minorities suffer from heightened risk factors and poorer overall health and access to health care. Our mission is to prevent, reduce and eliminate health disparities in our communities.

Our prevention research is driving improvement in areas such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, stroke and HIV. We are increasing the underrepresented minority student and faculty population. Our innovative fellowship program fosters collaborative research among junior research faculty and community leaders and stakeholders. Through community partnerships, we work to improve prevention and outreach efforts affecting women in underserved and low-income communities in North Texas. Current efforts are focused on obesity and cancer.

Institute for Translational Research

The goal of our new Institute for Translational Research is to give patients access to therapeutics and diagnostics faster than ever before. The new institute is expected to translate basic science into treatments and new procedures for Alzheimer’s and other diseases.

The bench-to-bedside approach that characterizes translational research means that scientific discoveries will advance to human trials with the highest possible chance of success. Ultimately, patients benefit from receiving cutting-edge therapies quicker.
