TCOM Announces Significant Seed Grant Funding to Propel Faculty Research Initiatives

In a significant boost to health sciences research, the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth has allocated seed grants totaling $99,211. This strategic funding underlines TCOM’s commitment to fostering groundbreaking research that promises to expand the horizons of medical knowledge and practice.

Dr. Frank Filipetto, dean of TCOM, enthusiastically shared his vision for these grants, “Our faculty’s passion for research is at the heart of TCOM’s mission. These grants not only support their innovative ideas but also lay the groundwork for attracting further funding and expanding research initiatives. It’s an exciting time for TCOM as we push the boundaries of medical research and education.”

This year’s seed grants focus on research projects across four pivotal areas aligned with TCOM’s strategic goals: whole health, health disparities, health systems sciences and osteopathic practices & principles. The diversity of these projects showcases TCOM’s comprehensive approach to health sciences.

Advancing Whole Health for the Older Patient

Spearheaded by Dr. Tyson Garfield from the Department of Internal Medicine & Geriatrics, this research delves into improving holistic health care approaches for the elderly.

Evaluating a Novel Health Policy Curriculum in Undergraduate Medical Education: A Pilot Study

Led by Drs. Amany Hassan, Janet Lieto and Lin Nelson of the Medical Education & Health Systems Science Department, this study aims to revolutionize health policy education in medical schools.

Pilot Data Registry for the Performing Arts Medicine Clinic

Dr. Yein Lee from the Department of Family & Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine is at the forefront of creating a unique data registry to better understand health needs in the performing arts community.

Development and Validation of a Precise and Accurate Skin Color Scale Proposal Clarification

Undertaken by Dr. Michael Carletti in Internal Medicine & Geriatrics, this project seeks to enhance dermatological diagnosis and treatment through improved skin color scales.

These seed grants are a testament to TCOM’s dedication to nurturing research that addresses crucial health challenges and disparities, while also honoring the principles of osteopathic medicine. Each project holds the potential to significantly contribute to its field, setting the stage for future advancements in health sciences.
