Reporting Suspicious Persons & Activity

REMINDER: Each of us must take responsibility for making the campus a safer environment. Reporting suspicious persons and behaviors is an important action you can take to help the police keep the campus safe.

The following are examples of behaviors that could be considered suspicious:

• You witness an individual you do not recognize going from room to room or office to office.
• You witness an individual, or individuals, standing around a bicycle rack.
• You witness an individual acting belligerent or hostile toward others.
• You witness an individual who appears to be intoxicated.
• You witness solicitation on campus.
• You witness panhandling on campus.
• If it doesn’t look or feel right…it probably isn’t – call the police.

When you call dispatch, be prepared to describe the person(s), and stay on the phone until the dispatcher tells you it is okay to hang up.  When giving a physical description of a person, it is important to give both the general physical description, and specific physical description.  They are as follows:

Physical description – general:

• Ethnicity
• Gender
• Height
• Weight
• Age

Physical description – specific:

• Hair color
• Hair length
• Hair style
• Ball cap?
• Facial Hair?
• Facial hair style (ex. beard/goatee)
• Shorts/Pants & color
• Shoes & color
• Was the person carrying anything? (Backpack/purse/etc.)

*As you can see, when giving a specific physical description, it is always important to start from the top of the head and then work your way down to the feet.
