Research funded by a seed grant from the Department of Physiology and Anatomy at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth has produced new findings on the developmental abnormalities associated with osteogenesis imperfecta.

The collaborative studies explored the effects of osteogenesis imperfecta, known as brittle bone disease, on skull development, the ear and hearing, and dental development. The research was conducted by the labs of Dr. Rachel Menegaz, Dr. Lauren Gonzales and Dr. Emma Handler in the Center for Anatomical Sciences at HSC. The findings appear in the March 2024 issue of The Anatomical Record.

The three studies were led by recent graduates of the College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences during their training in the MS in Medical Science Research Track program. In addition to the journal publications, the students presented their research at the American Association of Anatomy national meeting and were recognized for their work by AAA.

“Seed grants like this one play such an important role in sparking collaborative research and give our students the chance to be a part of extraordinary research experiences,” Gonzales said.

“We are extremely proud of the work of these students and their success highlights the amazing research in the field of anatomy happening right here at HSC.”
