Supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. The Summer Multicultural Advanced Research Training (SMART) program brings undergraduate students to the UNT Health Science Center campus to participate in a 10-week biomedical science project. Participants become familiar with the varied disciplines and methodologies used in biomedical research.

Eligibility Requirements

• Students currently enrolled in freshman and sophomore year
• 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average
• U. S. Citizen or permanent residency
• Major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry or other life science
• Students intending to pursue biomedical research careers

 Program Components

• Faculty mentors
• Ten-weeks of mentor-guided research
• Mini-lecture series in Biomedical Sciences focus areas
• Preparation for research
• Research presentation skills
• Library and electronic research techniques
• Poster Presentation of Research at Program-end
• Mentee Training and Networking through the National Research Mentoring Network

Summer Research Internship Scholar Support:

• Stipend Allowance of approximately $4,000 (minus taxes)
• Living Accommodations
• Travel Allowance
